Garden City High School is a high school located in Garden City, Michigan, United States. The athletic teams are known as the Cougars. There are approximately 1,800 students enrolled. The colors are Orange and Blue. The principal is Derek Fisher.

School History

Garden City East (the current location of Garden City High School) and Garden City West (the current location of Garden City Middle School) consolidated during the 1982-1983 school year, to become Garden City High School at the current location. Prior to this consolidation, Garden City East was known as the Panthers with the colors Royal Blue and White. Garden City West was known as the Tigers and were Black and Orange. When the 2 schools consolidated, the first graduating class chose the colors, the seniors coming from West chose the mascot (the Cougar) and the seniors from East chose the colors (Royal Blue and Orange). The senior classes went from approximately 300 students at each school, to a total of a little over 600 students in the graduating class of 1983.

Sports History

Garden City High School became the MEGA Blue District Champions in 2006 on the basketball court & the state champions of softball of 2008. In 2009 they became part of the brand new conference known as the Western Wayne Athletic Conference (WWAC). Garden City Varsity Pom Pon team also won State Championships in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The JV Football team won the WWAC Red Division Championship in 2011. The Varsity team finished 6-3 in 2011 to make the Michigan State Playoffs for the first time since 2000. They would be eliminated at Allen Park High, by a final score of 28-27.

Bus Controversy

The School Board provides buses to the Elementary Schools, The Middle School, and Cambridge High School, but, since 2010 has not provided bus transportation to the High School because of an Elementary School conversion. The decision has sparked much controversy throughout The City

Sports Rivals

Rivals include Crestwood High School, Lee M. Thurston High School and Edsel Ford High School Edsel Ford is mainly a Football rivalry with intense games, penalties for unsportsmanlike and ejections. Edsel Ford is considered to be the Cougars biggest Football Rival.
